As a result of the measures undertaken by the business unit to increase the freight base and income, loaded freight turnover grew 0.3% to 2,304.8 bln tkm in 2015.
Key achievements of the business unit in 2015
- Despite the crisis, loaded freight turnover totalled 2,304.8 bln tkm, up 0.3% from the 2014 level, thanks to measures implemented by the business unit to increase the freight base and income.
- A total of 23,076 trains took part in the ‘Scheduled Freight Shipments with an Agreed Departure and Arrival Time’ project (growth of 59%)
- The proportion of shipments delivered by the required (contractual) date increased 5.8 p.p. to 92.9%
- The route speed of container trains grew 1.1% to 892 km/day, and 6.1% to 1,139 km/day as part of the ‘Trans-Siberian Mainline in 7 Days’ project
- The share of the Russian Railways Group’s profit from the implementation of integrated transportation and logistics services
Passenger
Transportation
Russian Railways worked to develop and improve passenger transportation as well as enhance the quality and expand the range of services offered in 2015 in order to stabilise its share of the railway passenger transportation market.
Key achievements of the business unit in 2015
- Passenger turnover via rapid-transit trains grew 25% to 2.5 bln pass. km in 2015. Passenger turnover via long-haul rapid-transit trains on domestic routes increased 26% to 2,440.2 bln pass. km
- A total of 1,020.4 mln passengers were transported, including 97.9 mln passengers on long-haul transportation and 922.5 mln passengers on suburban transportation
- Passenger turnover via Russian Railways infrastructure totalled 120.4 bln pass. km, including 89.5 bln pass. km for long-haul transportation and 30.9 bln pass. km for suburban traffic
- Strizh trains began running from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod in June. Some 700,000 passengers were transported for the year
- As part of the Daily Express programme, 39 train pairs operate on 21 routes on the railway network under the current schedule. A total of 8.2 mln passengers were transported under the programme, a 50% increase from the previous year
- The geography of double-decker rolling stock was expanded to 4 new routes. For the year, double-decker trains carried approximately 1.5 mln passengers
- Active efforts to concentrate Sapsan high-speed trains on the Moscow-St Petersburg line helped railway transportation to maintain a 64% share of this route
- Multimodal transportation organised on 8 routes

Business Unit
The Railway Transportation and Infrastructure Business Unit consolidates the core production business divisions that support the Company’s activities in railway transportation as well as the maintenance and development of infrastructure and locomotives.
Key achievements of business unit in 2015
- Improvements were made to the internal efficiency of production unit divisions, making it possible to fulfil the main budget parameters for the use of rolling stock, including for the average freight train weight (+0.9% versus the 2014 level), average daily locomotive productivity (+3.7%) and service speed (+3.7%)
- The share of loaded shipments delivered within the required (contractual) period in loaded railcars increased 5.2 p.p. versus the 2014 level
- The average freight delivery speed of loaded shipments grew by 44.1 km/day (13.5%) to 371.5 km/day
- The freight train traffic schedule improved by 2.9 p.p. in terms of departure and by 12.9 p.p. in terms of travel time
- All parameters of passenger train scheduling were improved, including by 0.7 p.p. for departure, 0.2 p.p. for embarkation/disembarkation stations on the train’s route and 0.8 p.p. for arrival at the destination station versus the 2014 level
- The scheduling of suburban trains ensured growth versus 2014 of 0.2 p.p. for departure from the departure point, 0.3 p.p. for arrival at intermediate destinations, 0.4 p.p. for departure from immediate destinations and 0.2 p.p. for arrival at destination points
- Railway stations improved their quality of work. The downtime of transit railcars at marshalling yards declined 14.8% without processing and 10.3% with processing, while the time of railcar terminal operations at stations decreased 21.1% compared with 2014
- The number of downtime hours in the work time of locomotive crews decreased 15.8% compared with 2014 while the plan was for a 7% reduction
- As a result of implementing an energy efficiency programme, renovating the locomotive fleet and introducing an optimal energy schedule for train traffic, the specific consumption of fuel and energy resources fell 2.0% for train traction and 1.2% for electric traction versus the 2014 level
International Engineering
and Transportation Construction
In 2015, Russian Railways continued implementing initiatives and projects that aim to strengthen the Company’s competitiveness on the international passenger and freight transportation market as well as ensure the integration of the national railway network into the Eurasian transportation and logistics system. The Company fully met its contractual obligations as part of projects to develop railway infrastructure abroad and undertook measures to develop new and promising markets.
Key achievements of business unit in 2015
- Russian Railways continued implementing measures to achieve the goals set forth in the Group’s Development Strategy and Long-term Development Programme. Two major projects helped the Group to meet its objectives — the construction and modernisation of railway infrastructure in Serbia and the North Korean project Khasan-Rason. Most of the business unit’s revenue was generated by income from the implementation of projects to build the Belgrade-Pancevo railway line and northern sections of the Corridor X Pan-European railway in Serbia. The business unit had revenue of RUB 5.3 bln in 2015, an increase of more than 380% from the results of the previous year.
- Interaction with countries of the Asian-Pacific Region intensified significantly, above all with China, North Korea and Mongolia, in the implementation of joint projects
- The Russian Railways Group continued implementing infrastructure projects abroad in accordance with previously signed agreements and memorandums.

The development of the Social Unit is based on an objective assessment of the added value created from social support to employees and the effective use of the unit’s assets to provide market services.
